Homework
All children from 1st Class – 6th Class have a homework diary which should be signed by parents every night. It is important that the length of time taken is written into the diary also. Every Friday all classes from 1st to 6th have a Spellings and Tables test. No class is limited to these guidelines. The class teacher may choose to increase or decrease the amount of homework depending on the needs of the children at any given time. The times below are a rough guideline to what the children in each class should spend doing their homework. A child may take several minutes less or more than the specified times.
Junior Infants – 15 minutes:
- Reading – Irish and/or English every evening.
- Written Work – One subject every evening – e.g.Patterns, Sentences, Work Cards, Number Work.
Senior Infants – 20 minutes:
- Reading – Irish and/or English every evening.
- Written Work – One subject every evening- e.g.Patterns, Sentences, Work Cards, Number Work.
1st and 2nd Class – 35 minutes:
- Reading – Irish and English every evening.
- Written Work – Irish and/or English and Maths every night -Sums, questions/sentences – handwriting, work books, etc.
- Spellings – As organised by days and weeks in the books “Craic le Litriú” and “My Spelling workbook”.
- 4. Tables: Addition and subtraction. One set per week.
3rd and 4th Class – 35-45 minutes:
- 1. Reading – Irish and English every evening.
- 2. Written Work – Irish and English and another subject at times.
- 3. Maths – questions every night.
- 4. Spellings – As organised by days and weeks in the books “Craic le Litriú” and “My Spelling workbook”. English and Irish.
- 5. Tables – Division and Subtraction. One set per week.
5th and 6th Class – 45 minutes – one hour:
- 1. Reading – Irish and English every evening.
- 2. Written Work – Irish and English and another subject.
- 3. Maths – questions every night.
- 4. Spellings – As organised by days and weeks in the books “Craic le Litriú” and “My Spelling workbook”.
- 5. Tables – Revision. One set every week.
